Chapter 11: The Echo of the Past

Chapter 11: The Echo of the Past

With Julian Vance taken into custody without a single shot fired, a profound sense of relief washed over the Shaker Heights estate. However, peace is a fragile garden that requires constant tending.
A week after the gala, a unexpected package arrived at the front gate. It contained no explosive devices or threats, but rather an old, leather-bound journal that belonged to Mia’s late father, Thomas Carter.
Mia sat in the sunroom, tracing the worn gold lettering on the leather cover. Tears welled in her eyes as she turned the yellowed pages filled with hand-written sketches, engineering diagrams, and deeply personal diary entries.
"My father wasn't just a low-level accountant for the old syndicate," Mia said, her voice trembling as Dominic sat beside her on the velvet sofa. "He was trying to expose them. He kept a secondary ledger documenting where the syndicate buried millions of dollars stolen from working-class families across New York."
Dominic took the journal gently, reading a passage dated ten years ago.
"Thomas knew the risks," Dominic realized, his face grim. "When my father’s generation ran the city, they crushed anyone who tried to stand up for the innocent. Your father hid this journal before he disappeared, hoping that one day someone would use it to give the money back to the people it was stolen from."
Mia looked up at Dominic, her heart aching for the pain both their families had endured. "Dominic... can we do it? Can we find those funds and return them?"
Dominic didn't hesitate for a second. "Every cent. Your father gave his life to protect the truth. We will fulfill his final wish."

"It won't be easy," I interjected from the doorway, holding a laptop. "That money was stashed in a network of abandoned industrial safe-houses along the Hudson River. And word on the street is that remnant enforcers from the old regime are looking for those same assets."
Dominic stood up, placing a hand on Mia’s shoulder. "Then we beat them to it. Not for greed, but for justice."
