Chapter 8: Shadows in the Ledger

The transition from a empire built on tactical control to a quiet, legitimate corporation was never going to be as simple as changing the name on an office door. While the morning sun lit up the kitchen in Shaker Heights, the reality of Dominic Vale’s vast holdings required a ruthless, meticulous auditing process.

I sat in the secure operations office on the sub-level of the estate, surrounded by glowing monitors and mountains of encrypted financial records. As Dominic’s head of security and chief strategist, my job wasn't just to watch the perimeter gates; it was to ensure that the ghost of Dominic’s past didn't slip through the legal cracks of his future.

A soft knock echoed against the reinforced oak door. Dominic walked in, holding two porcelain mugs of black coffee. He set one on my desk, leaning against the edge of the mahogany table. Without his dark tailored suits and tactical ear-piece, he looked younger, yet the sharp intelligence in his eyes remained entirely unchanged.

"What are we looking at?" Dominic asked, his voice low and deliberate.

"The Chicago Board cleared out their accounts as promised," I said, rotating a monitor toward him. "Vinnie Gallo kept his word. But while scrubbing the New England logistics network, I found an anomaly. A ghost account under the name Elysian Holding Group. It’s been draining two hundred thousand dollars every month for the last three years."

Dominic’s brow furrowed slightly. "Elysian was my brother’s shell company before he passed. That account should have been liquidated four years ago."

"Someone reactivated it six months ago," I replied, pulling up the digital signatures. "The access key was used from an IP address in downtown Manhattan. Dominic, this isn't an automated glitch. Someone inside our old network is using your late brother's name to move dark capital."

Before Dominic could respond, the security system chimed. Mia appeared on the upper hallway monitor, holding a basket of fresh laundry, laughing as Harper chased a golden retriever puppy they had adopted only days prior. The sight was a stark contrast to the dark ledger burning on the screen before us.

"We don't bring this upstairs," Dominic said quietly, his gaze softening as he looked at the monitor before returning to the financial figures. "Mia and Harper finally feel safe here. I swore to Mia that the shadows were done. Fix this clean, without blood, without noise."

"If we press the bank legally, the owner of Elysian will get alerted and vanish," I cautioned. "We need to lure them out."

"Then set a trap," Dominic commanded, his voice dropping an octave into the authoritative tone that had once ruled the Eastern seaboard. "Increase the transfer amount to five hundred thousand tomorrow morning. Let them think the pipeline is open wider than ever. When they go to claim it, I want to know exactly who is trying to stand on my brother's grave."
