Chapter 1 - THE HOUSE THAT NEVER LAUGHED From the outside, the Miller estate looked like the kind of home people in Dallas dreamed about.

Its white stone walls gleamed beneath the Texas sun. Tall windows reflected the manicured lawn, while enormous oak trees lined the private driveway like silent guards. At night, warm golden lights illuminated the mansion, making it appear peaceful, elegant, almost perfect.

But perfection was often only another word for a carefully hidden lie.

Inside, the house was strangely quiet.

Elena Morales noticed it every morning.

She had worked for the Miller family for almost two years, long enough to know every sound the mansion made—the hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen, the soft click of the library door, the distant chime of the grandfather clock, even the particular creak of the third stair from the bottom.

Most importantly, she knew the sound of Clara laughing.

Two-year-old Clara Miller was the brightest thing in the entire house.

She loved yellow blocks.

She loved stuffed rabbits.

And she loved following Elena from room to room as though the young maid were the safest person in the world.

That morning, Clara sat on the living-room rug, stacking yellow blocks into a crooked tower.

Elena smiled.

“Careful, sweetheart.”

Clara giggled.

The tower collapsed.

For a few seconds, the mansion actually sounded alive.

Then Victoria Miller entered.

She wore an expensive cream-colored dress and carried a designer handbag that cost more than Elena earned in several months.

Victoria stopped at the doorway.

Her eyes moved from Clara to Elena.

The smile on her face never reached her eyes.

“Mark called?” Elena asked politely.

“No.”

Victoria's answer was cold.

“He's probably too busy.”

Elena lowered her gaze.

Everyone in the house knew Mark traveled constantly.

He was a successful corporate executive, and his business trips sometimes lasted weeks. He loved Clara deeply, but work had consumed his life.

Victoria, meanwhile, had begun spending money almost recklessly.

Luxury stores.

Private accounts.

Expensive vacations.

Designer jewelry.

Elena had noticed the arguments.

She had heard Mark's voice through closed doors.

We need to know where the money is going.

And Victoria had begun to panic.

Because somewhere inside those expensive walls was a secret she could not afford to let Mark discover.

That afternoon, Elena was cleaning the marble foyer when she heard tiny footsteps above her.

She looked up.

Clara stood near the second-floor railing.

And directly behind her stood Victoria.

For one long second, neither woman moved.

Elena's hand froze around the dust cloth.

Something about Victoria's expression made the room suddenly feel colder.

Then Victoria placed one hand on Clara's back.

And Elena felt a chill run through her entire body.
