Chapter 2 - THE STAIRCASE The staircase was the centerpiece of the mansion.
Wide wooden steps descended toward the marble foyer beneath an enormous crystal chandelier.
It was beautiful.
It was also dangerous.
Elena had warned Clara dozens of times never to climb it alone.
But that afternoon, Clara was holding a tiny red toy car and smiling innocently.
“Come back, sweetheart,” Elena called.
Clara turned.
Victoria didn't.
Her eyes remained fixed on the marble floor far below.
For a moment, Elena thought she was simply distracted.
Then Victoria's hand moved.
A small push.
Almost invisible.
But deliberate.
Clara's tiny shoes slipped.
The toy car flew from her hand.
Her body tipped forward.
“CLARA!”
The scream tore through the mansion.
Elena dropped everything.
She ran.
Clara fell down the staircase.
One step.
Two.
Three.
Then her small body cleared the final edge.
Elena threw herself across the marble floor.
She didn't think about the impact.
She didn't think about her own safety.
She only saw Clara.
Elena stretched both arms forward.
She caught the child against her chest.
The force sent them sliding across the floor.
Elena's shoulder slammed into the wooden banister.
Pain exploded through her body.
But Clara was alive.
Crying.
Terrified.
Alive.
Elena held her tightly.
“It's okay. You're safe. You're safe.”
At the top of the staircase, Victoria stood completely still.
Her face was strangely calm.
Then she suddenly gasped.
“Oh my God!”
She rushed down several steps.
“What happened?”
Elena looked up.
Her breathing was ragged.
Her hands trembled.
“She pushed her.”
Victoria froze.
“What?”
“You pushed Clara.”
“No!”
Victoria's voice became louder.
“I would never do that!”
Before Elena could answer, the mansion's front doors swung open.
Mark Miller stepped inside.
He had barely returned from the airport.
His suitcase dropped from his hand when he heard Clara screaming.
He looked toward the staircase.
Then toward Elena.
Then at his daughter.
“Clara!”

He ran.
And Elena knew that whatever happened next would change the Miller family forever.
