Chapter 18 - THE DRAWING One rainy afternoon, Clara sat at the kitchen table drawing.


Mark glanced over.
“What are you making?”
“A house.”
He smiled.
“Is that our house?”
Clara nodded.
She pointed at three figures.
“Daddy.”
Then Elena.
“Lena.”
Then herself.
Mark's eyes became wet.
“What about Mommy?”
Clara paused.
She looked at the paper.
Then quietly said:
“Mommy is far away.”
Mark didn't correct her.
He simply kissed her forehead.
Clara continued drawing.
At the top of the picture, she added a huge yellow sun.
Beneath it, everyone was smiling.
Mark looked at Elena.
She smiled back.

They were simply grateful to still have a future.
