Chapter 10 - THE FIRST COURT HEARING Victoria appeared in court wearing a plain gray uniform.
The woman who once walked through Dallas charity galas covered in diamonds now sat beneath fluorescent courtroom lights.
She looked smaller.
Older.
Angrier.
Her attorneys argued that she had been under extreme emotional and financial pressure.
They asked the court for leniency.
Mark listened.
He felt no satisfaction.
Only sadness.
This woman had once been the mother of his child.
The judge asked whether he wished to make a statement.
Mark stood.
“My daughter is alive because Elena didn't hesitate.”
He paused.
“I don't want revenge.”
Victoria looked up.
“I want accountability.”
The courtroom became silent.
Mark sat down.
Then Elena was called to testify.
She described the staircase.
The fall.
The terror.
She never exaggerated.
She never screamed.
