Chapter 9 - A NEW HOME The mansion changed slowly.
The cold marble foyer remained.
But the atmosphere changed.
Mark stopped traveling constantly.
He accepted a local executive position.
He began having breakfast with Clara.
He learned how she liked her pancakes.
He learned which stuffed rabbit she wanted beside her at night.
He learned that bedtime stories were more important than conference calls.
Elena became Clara's official nanny.
Mark established a trust for her future.
“You saved my daughter,” he told Elena.
“I would do it again.”
“I know.”
The house was remodeled.
Warm wooden flooring replaced some of the cold stone.
New family photographs appeared on the walls.
Clara's drawings covered the refrigerator.
For the first time, the mansion looked lived in.
One evening, Mark stood in the kitchen listening to Clara laugh.
He smiled.
Then he noticed Elena watching him.
“What?”
“You look happy.”
