Chapter 20 - THE LIGHT BEYOND THE STAIRS Years after the incident, the old staircase was still there.

But Clara no longer feared it.

She ran down the steps laughing, holding a backpack over one shoulder.

“Wait for me!”

Mark laughed from the foyer.

Elena followed behind her.

The house was no longer silent.

It was full of life.

Full of footsteps.

Full of laughter.

Full of ordinary moments that once seemed impossible.

Mark stopped near the bottom of the staircase.

For a brief second, he remembered the day Clara nearly fell.

He remembered Elena's scream.

The camera footage.

The police.

The courtroom.

The fear.

Then he looked at Clara.

She was alive.

Happy.

Safe.

And that was enough.

Elena walked beside him.

“Still thinking about it?”

“Sometimes.”

“Does it hurt?”

Mark looked at his daughter.

“Not the way it used to.”

Clara turned around.

“Daddy! Lena! Come on!”

They smiled and followed her into the backyard.

The Texas evening was warm.

The sky stretched endlessly above them.

And for the first time, the Miller home felt completely peaceful.

But as Clara ran toward the garden, she suddenly stopped.

She had noticed something near the mailbox.

A small white envelope.

No return address.

Mark walked toward it.

His smile disappeared.

Elena noticed immediately.

“What is it?”

Mark picked up the envelope.

On the front was a single handwritten sentence:

“Some secrets never stay buried.”

He looked toward the house.

Then toward Clara.

The past was supposed to be over.

But perhaps some stories didn't truly end.

Perhaps they simply waited.

Mark slowly opened the envelope.

And whatever was written inside was about to change their lives again.
