Chapter 16 - THE HOUSE BECOMES A HOME A year passed.


The mansion no longer felt silent.
Clara's laughter echoed through the hallways.
Elena cooked breakfast while music played.
Mark worked fewer hours.
On Sundays, they ate together.
Sometimes they argued about what movie to watch.
Sometimes Clara threw food.
Sometimes everyone laughed so hard they couldn't breathe.
It wasn't perfect.
It was real.
Mark eventually removed the enormous decorative mirror near the staircase.
He replaced it with family photographs.
One showed Clara laughing.
Another showed Elena holding her.
Another showed Mark carrying Clara through the backyard.
The staircase remained.

But it no longer represented terror.
It represented survival.
