Chapter 12 - Whispers in the DarkNight fell over Boston like a heavy velvet curtain. The skyline glittered with millions of neon lights, visible through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the West Wing executive suite.

Isabella stood by the glass, holding a cup of lukewarm tea, watching the distant headlights crawl across the Charles River bridges. Her mind was racing. Less than forty-eight hours ago, she was scrubbing marble floors with aching knees, terrified of losing a minimum-wage job that kept her mother's medical bills paid. Now, she was reviewing multi-million dollar portfolios and standing beside the most powerful man in New England as he dismantled an entire corporate conspiracy.
The heavy oak door opened behind her.
Adrian walked in, having finally removed his suit jacket. He tossed his tie onto the corner of the sofa and walked over to the minibar, pouring two fingers of aged bourbon into a heavy crystal glass.
"You handled the board like you've been doing it for a decade," Adrian said, his voice cutting through the quiet hum of the HVAC system. He took a slow sip of the amber liquid.
"Numbers don't lie, Mr. Harrington," Isabella replied without turning around. "People do."
Adrian walked up beside her, stopping just a foot away. He stared out at the city skyline as well. "You can drop the 'Mr. Harrington' when it's just the two of us, Isabella. We passed formal pleasantries about twelve conspiracies ago."
Isabella turned her head to look at him. In the dim amber glow of the suite, the harsh, predatory edge of the corporate CEO seemed to soften slightly, revealing the heavy burden of a man who had spent his entire life fighting invisible enemies.
"What happens now?" she asked quietly. "Richard and Marcus are gone. Victoria is neutralized. But the board still has people loyal to the old guard. They're going to push back."
"Let them," Adrian said, his dark eyes flashing with dangerous confidence. "A cornered rat only reveals where its nest is hidden. What I want to know is what you want, Isabella."
Isabella blinked, caught off guard. "Me?"
"You saved Eleanor's cane. You cracked the firewall. You destroyed Sterling in front of the entire board," Adrian said, turning to face her fully, his gaze intense and unyielding. "You could have anything you want right now. A blank check, an executive position in any subsidiary you choose, or a full scholarship to any university in the world, fully paid by the Harrington Foundation."
Isabella held his gaze, her heart hammering against her ribs—not out of fear, but out of a sudden, powerful realization. She didn't want a handout. She didn't want to go back to school to sit in a lecture hall while the real world was carved up by wolves.
She wanted to stand right here. Beside the wolf.
"I don't want a check, Adrian," she said steadily, her voice unwavering. "And I don't want a scholarship."
Adrian raised an eyebrow, a faint, intrigued smirk playing on his lips. "Then what do you want?"
"I want to sit at the table," Isabella said, her eyes locking onto his with absolute resolve. "Not as a maid. Not as an assistant. As an equal."

Adrian stared at her for a long, silent moment. Then, slowly, a genuine, rare smile broke across his face—transforming him from a cold corporate machine into a man who had finally found what he was looking for.
"Consider the seat yours," Adrian said softly.
