Chapter 9 - The Weight of the CrownBy 8:50 AM, Isabella Moore was no longer dodging estate supervisors or scrubbing marble floors. She sat behind a gleaming, custom-built walnut desk on the third floor of the West Wing, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and a panoramic view of the estate's sprawling northern gardens.

Her fingers flew across her mechanical keyboard as she finalized the asset allocation summaries Adrian had requested. Every column of numbers, every equity projection, every subsidiary valuation was crisp, accurate, and meticulously formatted.

For the first time in two years, she wasn't hiding in the shadows. She was at the center of the machine.

The heavy oak door to her office swung open without a knock. Adrian walked in, holding a fresh cup of black coffee. He tossed a thick leather-bound dossier onto her desk.

"What's that?" Isabella asked, pausing her typing.

"That is the preliminary audit of the European shipping subsidiaries," Adrian said, leaning casually against the edge of her desk. He looked at her with a critical, examining eye. "Marcus Vance wasn't working alone yesterday. He had a silent partner on the executive board—someone who approved the firewall override from an internal IP address we haven't mapped yet."

Isabella picked up the dossier, flipping open the cover to reveal a network schematic of Harrington Global's international nodes. Her eyes narrowed as she scanned the routing codes.

"This isn't just an internal leak," Isabella murmured, tracing a line of data with her index finger. "Whoever approved this override had to have Level-4 master clearance. Only three people in this entire organization hold Level-4 clearance: You, Victoria... and Chief Financial Officer Richard Sterling."

Adrian’s expression darkened instantly. Richard Sterling wasn't just a board member; he was a family friend of thirty years, a man who had bounced Adrian on his knee when he was a boy.

"Sterling," Adrian said softly, tasting the name like ash. "Are you certain?"

"The cryptographic signature matches his personal digital seal," Isabella replied, looking up to meet Adrian's dark eyes. "He didn't just approve the firewall bypass. He wired three million dollars in untraceable shell-company funds to Marcus Vance's offshore account forty-eight hours before the gala."

Adrian stared at her for a long, silent moment. The air in the room grew heavy, charged with the dangerous energy of a man whose world was fracturing from the inside out.

"They aren't just trying to take the cane, Isabella," Adrian said quietly, his voice dropping into a lethal register. "They're trying to liquidate the entire Harrington conglomerate before the annual shareholder vote next month."

Isabella didn't flinch. Instead, a fierce, determined spark lit up her dark eyes. She closed the dossier, stood up from her desk, and looked straight into the eyes of the most powerful man in the city.

"Then we don't wait for the shareholder meeting," Isabella said firmly. "We strike first."
