Chapter 13 - The Ghost of the PastThe morning sun washed over the limestone courtyards of the Harrington Estate, but inside the private library of the East Wing, the air felt cold and stagnant.

Isabella stood before a towering mahogany bookcase, her fingers tracing the leather-bound spines of ledgers dating back to the 1950s. Since her conversation with Adrian the previous night, her status within the estate had shifted from provisional assistant to permanent inner-circle strategist. Yet, the deeper she dug into the historical archives, the more she realized that Richard Sterling and Marcus Vance were merely symptoms of a much older, deeper rot.

The heavy oak door creaked open.

Eleanor wheeled herself into the room, pushed by a quiet young orderly who quickly bowed and withdrew, closing the door behind him. The elderly matriarch looked frail, wrapped in a cashmere shawl, but her silver eyes were as sharp as broken glass.

"You're looking for the 1994 ledger, aren't you, child?" Eleanor asked, her voice raspy with age but carrying an unmistakable authority.

Isabella turned away from the bookshelf, walking over to assist the wheelchair. "Mrs. Harrington, you should be resting. The doctor said—"

"The doctor is on my payroll, Isabella; he says whatever I pay him to say," Eleanor interrupted with a dry chuckle. She motioned toward a specific section of the lower shelf, near the floor. "Bottom shelf, behind the collected works of Winston Churchill. Pull the false panel."

Isabella knelt down, sliding aside the heavy volumes of Churchill's memoirs. Her fingers brushed against a small brass latch hidden in the dark wood. With a soft click, a concealed panel swung open, revealing a dusty metal lockbox.

"Bring it here," Eleanor instructed softly.

Isabella lifted the heavy metal box and placed it gently on the reading table before the fireplace. Eleanor produced a small, ornate silver key from a chain around her neck and unlocked the lid.

Inside lay a collection of yellowed newspaper clippings, notarized bank drafts, and a handwritten diary bearing the initials A.H. Sr.—Adrian’s grandfather.

"They didn't just try to steal the estate trust last week, Isabella," Eleanor said, her voice dropping to a low, solemn whisper. "They've been trying to kill this family from the inside for thirty years."

Isabella pulled out a notarized document from 1994—a partnership agreement between Adrian’s grandfather and Richard Sterling’s father. Across the signature line, stamped in bold red ink, was a word that made her blood run cold: FRAUD.

"Richard’s father didn't just invest in Harrington Global," Eleanor continued, her silver eyes fixed on the flames. "He engineered the hostile takeover that nearly destroyed us when Adrian was just ten years old. And Victoria... Victoria isn't just a disgruntled daughter-in-law. She is Richard Sterling’s biological niece."

Isabella’s breath caught in her throat. The pieces of the puzzle suddenly snapped together with terrifying clarity. Victoria wasn't married into the family by coincidence. She was a plant—a Trojan horse designed to infiltrate the Harrington bloodline from within.

Before Isabella could speak, the library doors flew open.

Adrian stood in the doorway, his chest heaving slightly, his dark eyes blazing with a dangerous, urgent fury.

"Isabella," Adrian said, his voice tight. "We have a massive problem."
