Chapter 8 - The Price of LoyaltyThe silence in the dining hall was deafening. The ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway sounded like a judge's gavel striking wood.

Marcus Vance stood frozen behind his chair, his hands gripping the mahogany edge so tightly his knuckles turned chalk-white. The aristocratic arrogance that had defined his demeanor just moments earlier had completely evaporated, replaced by the naked panic of a man who realized he had miscalculated his opponent entirely.
"Adrian," Marcus began, his voice lacking its previous smooth confidence. "Let’s not be rash. This is a family matter. External server audits can be misinterpreted. If there was a glitch in the routing logs—"
"A glitch?" Adrian interrupted, his voice cutting through the air like a razor. He walked slowly around the table, his footsteps echoing in the cavernous room. He stopped just inches from Marcus, towering over him by several inches. "You bypassed three layers of enterprise-grade firewall security to cover up an assault on the matriarch of this family. That isn't a glitch, Marcus. That is conspiracy to commit corporate and domestic obstruction."
Marcus swallowed hard, his throat working convulsively. He looked toward Victoria for support, but Victoria was staring at the floor, her chest heaving as she realized her entire coup had just unraveled before it even began.
Adrian didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to.
"Julian," Adrian called out without looking back.
The estate manager practically materialized by the dining room entrance, having been waiting in the hallway like a ghost. "Yes, Mr. Harrington?"
"Escort Mr. Vance off the premises. Ensure his legal credentials are flagged across all Harrington Global subsidiaries worldwide. If he tries to step foot in any building bearing our name, have security lock him in a holding cell until federal marshals arrive."
"Right away, sir!" Julian snapped, stepping forward with two Apex security guards flanking him.
"You can't do this!" Marcus snarled, his mask of professionalism finally snapping entirely as the guards grabbed his arms. He thrashed against their grip, pointing a trembling finger at Adrian. "I know about the offshore accounts! I know what your grandfather did in '98! You think you're untouchable, Adrian? You're sitting on a ticking time bomb!"
"Then I suggest you enjoy the federal penitentiary while you wait for it to go off," Adrian replied coldly.
With a swift, practiced motion, the security guards hauled Marcus toward the double doors. His protests echoed down the marble hallway until the heavy oak doors slammed shut, cutting him off completely.
The dining hall fell dead silent once more.
Victoria remained frozen at the end of the table, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. The red mark on her cheek seemed to burn brighter under the chandelier light. She looked at Adrian, then slowly shifted her terrified gaze toward Isabella, who stood calmly beside Adrian's right shoulder, holding her tablet like an executioner's ledger.
"And you," Adrian said quietly, turning his gaze back to Victoria.
Victoria flinched, clutching the edge of the table. "Adrian... please. I was just... Eleanor is old, she's losing her mind, she shouldn't be holding onto the estate keys—"
"Eleanor built this empire alongside our grandfather while you were still shopping for designer bags in Milan," Adrian said, his tone biting. "You are stripped of your voting rights on the family board. Your monthly allowance is reduced to baseline maintenance. And if you attempt to approach Eleanor—or anyone else in this household—without my direct written authorization, I will have you legally declared a public nuisance and evicted from the estate by sundown."
Victoria let out a choked, hysterical sob. She grabbed her designer handbag from the chair, turned on her heel, and ran out of the room, her Louboutin heels clicking frantically against the marble floor until the sound faded away.
Adrian stood alone at the head of the table for a long moment, staring at the empty chairs where his family had just attempted to usurp him. Then, he exhaled a slow, heavy breath and turned to Isabella.

"Pack your things from the servants' quarters," Adrian instructed smoothly. "Your new office is adjacent to mine in the West Wing. We have a board meeting at nine o'clock, and I expect you to have the asset allocation reports on my desk in twenty minutes."
Isabella gave a crisp, professional nod. "Yes, Mr. Harrington."
