Chapter 4 - The Ascent from the ShadowsThe words echoed in the cavernous silence of the ballroom.

For a brief, agonizing second, Isabella thought she had misheard him. In the rigid hierarchy of the Harrington Estate, moving out of the servant quarters wasn't a promotion; it was a vertical drop into unemployment or worse.
"Sir?" Isabella forced the word past her dry lips.
"You heard him," Victoria hissed, her voice dripping with spite even as she trembled from Adrian's earlier warning. She stepped forward, trying to claw back a shred of dignity. "She’s fired, Adrian. She assaulted a family member. She’s a criminal. You can’t just reward insubordination—"
"Victoria," Adrian said without turning around, his voice dropping into a chilling register that commanded silence. "I did not ask for your opinion. I made a statement."
He turned his full attention back to Isabella. His dark eyes scanned her from head to toe, noting the simple, utilitarian black-and-white uniform, the slightly scuffed leather shoes, and, most importantly, the steady, unyielding defiance in her posture. Most people who stood before Adrian Harrington folded within three seconds. Isabella had just stared down a billionaire without blinking, after having literally slapped his sister-in-law across the face.
"Julian," Adrian commanded without breaking eye contact with Isabella.
Julian scrambled forward, desperate to prove his usefulness after nearly perjuring himself. "Yes, Mr. Harrington! What do you need? Shall I call the internal disciplinary board?"
"You will prepare the executive suite on the third floor of the West Wing," Adrian said smoothly. "Have her uniform replaced with civilian attire appropriate for an executive assistant. From this moment on, Isabella Moore answers exclusively to me."
Julian’s eyes bulged. An executive assistant? To the CEO? The West Wing suites were reserved for high-ranking corporate executives visiting from international branches, not for floor-level housemaids plucked from the corridors.
Victoria let out a sharp, hysterical laugh. "Are you out of your mind, Adrian? You’re making a maid your right hand? What kind of game are you playing? She doesn't even have a college degree! She grew up in the West End slums!"
Adrian finally looked at Victoria, his gaze so cold it felt like physical frost. "And yet, Victoria, in the span of thirty seconds, she displayed more loyalty, more courage, and significantly more common sense than every single blood-relative and corporate leech currently sitting on my payroll combined."
He stepped closer to Isabella, towering over her by nearly a foot. He lowered his voice, speaking just loudly enough for her to hear over the crackle of the fireplace.
"Can you type, Isabella?"
"Yes, sir," she replied, her voice steady despite her racing pulse. "Ninety-five words per minute. I studied business administration at state night classes before my father's medical bills forced me to take work here."
"Can you keep a secret?"
"I’ve survived nineteen months in this house without gossiping once, Mr. Harrington. I’d say my discretion is exceptional."
A faint, ghostly smirk touched the corner of Adrian’s lips—so subtle that anyone else would have missed it.
"Good. Because starting tomorrow morning at 6:00 AM, you are going to help me dismantle every single person in this house who thinks they can steal from my family."
He turned sharply on his heel, gesturing to Julian with a flick of his wrist. "Get Madam Eleanor to her chambers. Have the medical staff check her vitals. And someone clean up this mess."

As Adrian strode toward the private elevator at the end of the hall, his polished shoes clicking rhythmically against the marble, Victoria stood rooted to the spot, her face twisted in pure, unadulterated venom. She watched Isabella with eyes that promised total destruction.
Isabella didn't look away this time. She stood tall, clutching the empty space where the cane had been, realizing that her life had just crossed a threshold from which there was no turning back.
