Chapter 3 - The Anatomy of BetrayalWithin ten minutes, the grand ballroom was completely empty of outsiders. The crystal chandeliers overhead hummed softly, casting brilliant shards of light across the vast, vacant floor. Only a handful of people remained: Eleanor in her wheelchair, Isabella standing beside her like a silent sentinel, Julian sweating profusely near the pillars, Victoria standing stiffly with her arms crossed, and Adrian, who still held the cane.

Adrian walked slowly toward the massive stone fireplace at the far end of the room, where a dying fire crackled. He didn't sit. He rested his right hand on the mantelpiece, turning his head slightly to look at Victoria.

"You have a habit of reaching for things that don't belong to you, Victoria," Adrian said casually, watching the flames reflect in his dark eyes.

Victoria forced a brittle, nervous laugh, though her hands were clenched so tightly her knuckles were white. "Adrian, are you out of your mind? You’re interrogating me? Look at my face! That feral little nobody hit me! If you don't have her thrown in a holding cell tonight, I swear to God, I’ll call my father—"

"Your father," Adrian interrupted, his voice cutting through her rant like a scalpel, "is currently under federal investigation for securities fraud, a mess my legal team has spent the last forty-eight hours cleaning up to keep the Harrington name off the front pages of the Wall Street Journal. If you invoke his name in this house again, Victoria, I will personally strip your corporate expense accounts, cancel your credit cards, and have you escorted out of these gates in a taxi with nothing more than the dress on your back."

The threat hung in the air, absolute and undeniable. Victoria gasped, stepping back as if she had been physically struck a second time. Her mouth opened and closed silently, her eyes wide with disbelief. Adrian had never spoken to her like that—not even during their coldest family dinners.

Adrian shifted his gaze from Victoria to Julian.

"Julian."

"S-Sir?" Julian stuttered, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead with a handkerchief.

"How long has Victoria been attempting to access the East Wing archives?"

Julian swallowed hard, his eyes darting nervously toward Victoria. "I... I wouldn't know, Mr. Harrington. The staff handles the daily maintenance—"

"Julian," Adrian repeated, his tone dangerously soft. "If you lie to me, you won't just lose your position here. You won't work in property management anywhere on this continent again. How long?"

Julian’s resolve crumbled instantly. He cast one terrified glance at Victoria, who was glaring daggers at him. "Six... six months, sir. Mrs. Harrington requested access logs, digital blueprints of the basement vault, and... and she inquired about the physical security keys held by Madam Eleanor."

Victoria’s face went completely grey. "Julian, you lying piece of trash—"

"That’s enough," Adrian commanded.

He finally looked down at the wooden cane in his hands. He pressed a small, hidden brass stud near the curved handle. With a soft click, the top portion of the cane slid outward, revealing a hollow core containing a narrow, gold-plated cryptographic drive and a heavily sealed parchment document bearing the original wax seal of the Harrington Estate founders from 1924.

Isabella stared at the hidden compartment, her breath catching. So that was why Victoria had lunged at Eleanor with such desperate frenzy. It wasn't just an old walking stick. It was the master override key to the family's primary trust and historical assets.

Adrian slid the gold drive out, tucking it neatly into his inner jacket pocket. Then, he looked directly at Isabella.

For the first time since he entered the room, his expression softened—not into warmth, but into a look of profound, calculating appraisal.

"What is your name, girl?" he asked.

Isabella swallowed the lump in her throat, squared her shoulders, and met his gaze without flinching.

"Isabella Moore, sir. Housemaid, lower tier."

May you like

Adrian gave a slow, almost imperceptible nod.

"Isabella," he said quietly, "effective immediately, you are no longer a housemaid."
