Chapter 11 - A Family Built on LiesThe old Vale estate had been abandoned for fifteen years.
Evelyn remembered it.
She had been there once.
With Cassandra.
With Julian's father.
With her own father.
"They weren't enemies," Evelyn said.
"They were partners."
Julian looked at her.
"Partners in what?"
"Human trafficking."
The words hung in the air.
Julian stepped backward.
"No."
"My father discovered their operation."
"And your father?"
"He tried to expose them."
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
"They killed him."
Julian looked around the estate.
"Then why did my father protect them?"
"Because they threatened you."
Silence.
Julian finally understood.
His father's lies hadn't protected the family.
They had trapped it.
A gunshot shattered the window.
Reed pulled Julian down.
Another shot.
Then another.
Evelyn screamed.
Julian crawled toward her.
"You okay?"
She nodded.
Then they heard a voice outside.
