At 3:17 a.m., he found it.
Two million dollars.
Transferred from the Vale Foundation.
The transfer occurred six days before Evelyn disappeared.
Recipient:
V. HALE HOLDINGS.
Julian stared at the screen.
His father had died years earlier.
Yet the account was still active.
Reed arrived shortly afterward.
"You found something."
Julian turned the laptop toward him.
Reed's expression hardened.
"That's not possible."
"What?"
"Victor Hale Holdings was dissolved twelve years ago."
"Then someone resurrected it."
Reed examined the transaction.
"Someone with access to your family's financial system."
Julian slowly stood.
"Who had that access?"
Reed looked at him.
"Your father's attorney."
Julian's face went pale.
"He's still alive."
"Where?"
Julian grabbed his coat.
"His office."
They arrived twenty minutes later.
The office door was open.
Every light was on.
The place had been abandoned.
A coffee cup sat on the desk.
Still warm.
Then Julian noticed the computer.
One file remained open.
A video.
He clicked play.
His father's face appeared on the screen.
Julian stopped breathing.
"If you're watching this," his father said, "then Evelyn is alive."
Julian staggered backward.
