Chapter 9 - Toby RemembersToby sat in the living room with a therapist.
Julian waited outside.
After thirty minutes, the therapist came out.
"He remembered something."
Julian stood immediately.
"What?"
"A sound."
"What sound?"
"A grandfather clock."
Julian frowned.
"We don't have a grandfather clock."
"Not anymore."
The therapist handed him a drawing.
Toby had drawn a clock.
A black clock.
Behind it was a door.
Julian recognized the room.
His father's study.
He rushed upstairs.
The old clock had been moved years ago.
But the outline on the wall remained.
Julian pulled it forward.
A hidden safe appeared.
Inside was a single cassette tape.
He found an old player.
The recording began.
His father's voice.
"If Julian ever discovers the truth, tell him this..."
Static.
Then:
"Cassandra was never Evelyn's enemy."
Julian froze.
The tape continued.
"The real enemy is inside our family."
The lights suddenly went out.
Someone screamed downstairs.
"Toby!"
Julian ran.
The front door was open.
