Chapter 4 - The Voice on the RecordingEvelyn couldn't sleep.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the bunker.

The darkness.

The concrete walls.

The locked steel door.

The sound of Cassandra's footsteps disappearing above her.

But one memory was different.

A voice.

Not Cassandra's.

A man's.

She reached for the hospital phone.

"Julian?"

"I'm here."

"I remembered something."

He immediately returned to her bedside.

"What?"

"He recorded me."

Julian frowned.

"Who?"

"The man."

"Where?"

"He put a microphone in the wall."

Detective Reed searched the house again.

This time they found it.

A tiny recording device hidden inside the ventilation system.

Julian listened to the recovered audio.

Static.

Then Evelyn's voice.

Weak.

Terrified.

"Please..."

A man's voice answered.

"Where is the account?"

"I don't know."

"You know exactly what I'm talking about."

"I never touched your money."

A pause.

Then:

"You still don't understand. This isn't about money."

Julian looked at Reed.

The recording continued.

The man's voice became colder.

"It's about what your husband inherited."

Evelyn whispered:

"What did Julian inherit?"

The recording stopped.

Julian stared at the speaker.

"What the hell did I inherit?"

Reed didn't answer.

His phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

"What?"

A long silence.

Then Reed said:

"Say that again."

He hung up.

"What's wrong?"

"Cassandra escaped."

Julian stared at him.

"That's impossible."

"The transport vehicle was attacked."

"Was anyone hurt?"

"Two officers."

"And Cassandra?"

May you like

Reed looked at him.

"She's gone."
