Chapter 13 - AMELIA'S LAST CALL Victor listened to Amelia's final voicemail alone.
Her voice was frightened.
“Victor, I found transfers from the children's foundation.”
A pause.
“Serena lied to us.”
Another pause.
“Warren knows.”
Her breathing became faster.
“I'm going to the police.”
Then a man's voice.
Amelia screamed:
“Get out of my car!”
The recording ended.
Victor sat completely still.
Lily stood in the doorway.
“You didn't know.”
Victor stared at the floor.
“I should have.”
Lily shook her head.
“You trusted people. That's not a crime.”
Victor looked toward Ethan's bedroom.
“For a long time, I thought protection meant controlling everything.”
He looked at Lily.
“Now I understand that protection means knowing when to listen.”
Traffic footage revealed Serena leaving Amelia's car.
Another vehicle followed.
Damien's.
The evidence was overwhelming.
But Damien still had Warren.
He sent Victor a video.
“Bring the ledgers.”
Victor agreed.
But he brought copies.
The real evidence stayed with Detective Quinn.
The trap was ready.
