Chapter 14 - THE MAN ABOVE SERENA The abandoned church smelled of dust, rain and old wood.
Warren was tied near the altar.
Damien stood beneath the broken stained-glass window.
Victor entered alone.
“Who ordered Amelia's death?”
Damien smiled.
“You still ask the wrong question.”
Warren suddenly shouted:
“August Montigue!”
Damien struck him.
Victor's expression hardened.
August had ordered the crash.
Serena helped cover it up.
Damien had helped arrange it.
Warren had buried the evidence.
Everything had begun with one man's obsession with protecting money.
Then police lights flooded the church windows.
Damien ran.
Victor followed.
They reached the bell tower.
Damien slipped.
Victor caught his brother's wrist.
Damien stared up at him.
“Why save me?”
Victor's answer was quiet.
“Because I refuse to become you.”
Police pulled Damien to safety.
He was arrested.
Warren agreed to cooperate.
Victor finally believed the nightmare was ending.
Then Detective Quinn's phone rang.
She listened.
Her expression changed.
“Victor…”
He turned.
“What?”
“August escaped.”
Victor's blood ran cold.
