Chapter 20 - THE NEXT CHAPTER Spring arrived over Lake Michigan.

The snow disappeared.

Flowers grew along the fence.

Ethan turned two.

He ran through the backyard while Lily followed, laughing.

Victor stood on the porch.

No suit.

No guards.

No intimidating entourage.

Just a father watching his son.

The man he had been was disappearing.

The man he wanted to become was finally taking shape.

That evening, Lily placed Ethan's birthday photograph on the mantel.

Victor studied it.

“You know what I realized?”

Lily turned.

“What?”

“The Blackwood name used to mean power.”

Lily smiled.

“And now?”

Victor looked through the open doors.

Rosa was laughing with the children.

Marco was teaching Ethan how to kick a ball.

Detective Quinn stood nearby, pretending she wasn't smiling.

Victor answered:

“Family.”

Lily nodded.

Then Ethan ran toward them.

“Daddy!”

Victor caught him.

The little boy wrapped his arms around his father's neck.

Lily watched them.

The nightmare was over.

But healing had only begun.

Victor looked toward the horizon.

“There's something I've been thinking about.”

“What?”

“The shelter.”

Lily smiled.

“You want to expand it.”

“Not just here.”

He looked toward the children playing in the yard.

“Across the country.”

Lily's eyes softened.

“Then we'll need help.”

Victor smiled.

“I know.”

He looked at her.

“That's why I was going to ask you.”

Lily laughed.

“Ask me what?”

“To build it with me.”

For a moment, she said nothing.

Then she opened the back door wider.

“Ready?”

Victor looked at Ethan.

Then at Lily.

“Always.”

They walked outside together.

The door remained open behind them.

For years, the Blackwood family had built walls to keep enemies out.

Now they had learned something far more powerful.

Sometimes the strongest house was the one with no locked doors.

As the sun disappeared over Lake Michigan, Ethan's laughter carried into the evening.

The past had taken almost everything from them.

But it had not taken their future.

Victor watched the last light disappear beyond the water.

For the first time, he wasn't afraid of tomorrow.

Then his phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

Victor answered.

A woman's voice whispered:

“Mr. Blackwood?”

Victor's expression changed.

“Who is this?”

A pause.

Then:

“My name is Elena.”

Lily looked at him.

Victor listened.

“I worked for August Montigue.”

Silence.

“And I have something your wife left behind before she died.”

Victor's eyes moved toward the lake.

“What?”

The woman whispered:

“The truth about why Amelia was really killed.”

The call ended.

Lily stepped closer.

“Victor?”

He slowly lowered the phone.

For one brief moment, the old instinct returned.

The instinct to control.

To attack.

To destroy whatever threatened his family.

But then he looked at Ethan.

His son was laughing beneath the evening sky.

Victor smiled.

“It's another secret.”

Lily nodded.

“Are we going to find out what it is?”

Victor looked toward the open road beyond the house.

“Yes.”

But this time, they would not walk into the darkness as broken people.

They would walk into it as a family.

Together.

The camera pulls slowly away from the house.

The warm lights glow against the blue evening.

Children laugh in the garden.

Lily stands beside Victor.

Ethan runs between them.

And far beyond the peaceful lake, somewhere in the darkness, another chapter is already waiting.

The nightmare was over.

The legacy had just begun.
