Chapter 19 - THE LEGACY Rosa became director of a children's shelter.

Marco began training caregivers to recognize signs of abuse.

Detective Quinn visited often, always pretending she happened to be nearby.

Ethan grew stronger.

The nightmares became fewer.

One evening, Lily opened a small memory box.

Inside were the nanny camera.

The black button.

A copy of the court judgment.

The photograph of Amelia.

Victor watched from the doorway.

“Why keep those?”

Lily looked at him.

“So Ethan can know the truth someday.”

Victor nodded.

“But the truth doesn't have to own him.”

Lily closed the box.

Outside, children were laughing.

The back door was open.

No guards stopped them.

No one lowered their voice when Victor entered.

The house had become everything the mansion never was.

Safe.

Warm.

Human.

Then Ethan woke crying.

Victor reached the bedroom first.

He stopped at the doorway.

He didn't command.

He didn't rush.

He waited.

Lily nodded.

Together, they sat beside Ethan.

The boy reached for both of them.

Victor took his hand.

Lily took the other.

Slowly, Ethan fell asleep.

Victor looked at Lily.

“You know what scares me?”

“What?”

“That one day he'll ask why none of us protected him sooner.”

Lily squeezed his hand.

“Then we'll tell him the truth.”

Victor looked at the sleeping child.

“And if he asks whether I'm a good man?”

Lily smiled softly.

“Tell him you're trying.”

For Victor, those three words meant more than forgiveness.

They meant possibility.
