Chapter 16 - THE COURTROOM DOOR CLOSES
Eleanor's legal problems moved forward.
The federal case included fraud, embezzlement and attempts to access Lily's trust.
Claire sat in the gallery.
She didn't feel victorious.
She felt tired.
Eleanor looked smaller now.
Without money and influence, the woman who once seemed invincible looked ordinary.
The judge issued a permanent restraining order protecting Claire and Lily.
Eleanor could no longer approach them.
The trust was protected.
Outside, Marcus took Claire's hand.
"It's over."
Claire looked toward the courthouse steps.
"Is it?"
"Yes."
She breathed deeply.
"She had everything."
Marcus smiled sadly.
"And lost everything trying to buy what money can't purchase."
Claire looked at him.
"What?"
"Love."
For the first time, Claire smiled.
The Bennett name no longer frightened her.
It was simply a name.
She was Claire.
