Chapter 21 - THE SECRET MARCUS CARRIED

Marcus sat across from Claire.
"I was young."
His voice was quiet.
"Right after law school, I joined Thorne's firm."
Claire listened.
"I didn't know what he was doing."
"Until you did."
Marcus nodded.
"He was using shell companies to push poor families out of their homes."
He looked ashamed.
"I confronted him."
"What happened?"
"He threatened me."
Marcus's hands tightened.
"He said he'd destroy my career and frame me for embezzlement."
Claire understood.
"So you quit."
"I walked away from corporate law."
Marcus looked at her.
"I thought I had escaped him."
"You did."
"No."
He shook his head.
"I carried him with me."
Claire moved closer.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I was afraid you'd see me differently."
She took his hand.
"I don't."
Marcus looked at her.
"Then we tell the truth."
Claire's voice was calm.
"Before he tells his version."
Marcus nodded.
For the first time, the secret wasn't a weapon.
May you like
It was evidence.
