Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN WHO BROUGHT THE EVIDENCE

By noon, the confrontation was everywhere.

The internet exploded.

News anchors replayed Claire's statement.

The hashtag #JusticeForLily spread across the country.

Bennett Development's stock dropped sharply.

Investors began calling.

But Claire wasn't watching the news.

She was sitting inside Marcus's office, staring at financial documents.

Then the door opened.

Vanessa walked in.

She looked nothing like the glamorous bride from the previous night.

Her face was pale.

Her hands were shaking.

"Ethan doesn't know I'm here," she whispered.

Claire stood.

"Why?"

Vanessa placed a silver flash drive on the desk.

"Because if he finds out, he'll destroy me."

Marcus picked it up.

"What is this?"

"Everything."

Vanessa swallowed.

"Offshore accounts. Construction funds. Gambling debts."

Claire stared.

"How much?"

"Twelve million dollars."

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

Vanessa continued.

"Ethan has been stealing from public construction projects."

She took a breath.

"And the watch?"

Claire looked up.

"He had already pledged it as collateral."

Marcus went still.

"The theft was fake?"

Vanessa nodded.

"He planned to file a two-hundred-thousand-dollar insurance claim."

Claire stared at the drive.

"My daughter was used to cover his gambling debts."

Vanessa began crying.

"I thought I was marrying a powerful man."

She wiped her face.

"Then I watched him hit Lily."

Her voice broke.

"I realized I wasn't marrying power."

"I was marrying a monster."

Claire walked around the desk.

She placed a hand over Vanessa's.

"You came here."

Vanessa nodded.

"That matters."

Marcus inserted the drive into his computer.

Numbers filled the screen.

Shell companies.

Offshore accounts.

Fraudulent transfers.

Everything Ethan had hidden was suddenly visible.

Marcus looked at Claire.

"The trap is bigger than we thought."

Claire stared at the screen.

"Then we'll bring down all of it."

Outside, sirens echoed through downtown Chicago.

And somewhere across the city, Ethan Bennett's perfect life was beginning to collapse.
