Chapter 23 - WE ARE NOT FOR SALE
Thorne filed an injunction.
The center's new music wing was suddenly accused of zoning violations.
If the injunction succeeded, the center could be closed for months.
Vanessa searched public records.
Deeds.
Shell companies.
Tax filings.
Then she found something.
"He's buying properties just before zoning decisions."
Marcus leaned closer.
"Can you prove bribery?"
"Not yet."
The paper trail disappeared into Delaware.
Meanwhile, Lily sat alone in the studio.
She listened to the adults arguing.
She knew fear.
She knew what it felt like when powerful people tried to take your home.
She picked up a giant canvas.
Then she painted.
The baker.
The music store owner.
The children.
Her mother.
Marcus.
The entire neighborhood.
At the bottom she painted five words:
WE ARE NOT FOR SALE.
Claire stood behind her.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Lily..."
The girl looked up.
"They're our people."
Claire hugged her.
"Yes."

And neither of them knew that Lily's painting was about to become more powerful than any courtroom argument.
