Chapter 3 - THE FAMILY'S PERFECT LIE
By nine the next morning, Bennett Tower was overflowing with reporters.
Ethan stood beneath a wall of cameras wearing a navy suit and the confident smile that had made investors trust him for years.
Beside him stood Vanessa.
Behind him stood Richard and Margaret.
The family looked untouchable.
Ethan approached the microphone.
"Before we discuss the Riverside Development Project, I'd like to address a personal matter."
Claire watched from the back of the atrium.
Marcus stood beside her.
Ethan smiled.
"My sister Claire has struggled emotionally for some time. Last night, during our wedding celebration, an unfortunate accident occurred involving my niece."
A reporter shouted:
"Was Lily hospitalized?"
Ethan nodded solemnly.
"She's receiving excellent care."
Another reporter asked:
"Was the child accused of stealing your watch?"
Ethan sighed.
"There's been a lot of misinformation."
Then Claire stepped forward.
The room fell silent.
Ethan's smile disappeared.
"Claire."
She continued walking.
Marcus followed.
Richard whispered:
"Security."
Marcus held up a court document.
"Don't bother."
He looked directly into the cameras.
"Ethan Bennett, Richard Bennett, and Bennett Development Group are being served with a civil complaint."
Chaos exploded.
Questions flew from every direction.
"What evidence do you have?"
"Was Ethan responsible for the assault?"
"Was the theft staged?"
Marcus answered calmly.
"The court has ordered the Hawthorne Grand Hotel to preserve and release its cloud surveillance."
Ethan's face turned pale.
Claire stepped toward the cameras.
"My daughter was framed."
Her voice was steady.
"Ethan planted his watch inside an eight-year-old child's purse."
The reporters erupted.
"And when I confronted him, he struck her."
Richard stepped toward the microphone.
"Claire, enough."
She looked at him.
"You had your chance."
Then she said the words that would destroy the Bennett empire.
"You cared more about protecting your stock price than protecting a bleeding child."
Cameras flashed.
Vanessa covered her face.
Margaret stood rigid.
Richard's voice cracked with rage.
"You have destroyed your place in this family."
Claire looked at the man who had spent thirty years teaching her to fear him.
"No, Father."
She turned toward the cameras.
"You destroyed it years ago."
Then she walked away.
Behind her, the Bennett family finally understood something terrifying.
