Chapter 8 - THE WOMAN WHO WALKED AWAY
Six months later, Vanessa returned.
She stood nervously inside the arts center.
Claire recognized her immediately.
"I heard about the center," Vanessa said.
"You look different."
"I feel different."
Vanessa had annulled her marriage to Ethan.
She had moved away.
She was now working with an organization helping victims escape abusive relationships.
"I wanted to give you something."
She placed an envelope on the table.
Inside was money from the sale of her engagement ring.
Claire stared.
"You don't have to do this."
"I know."
Vanessa smiled.
"I want the money to help children."
Claire understood.
The ring had represented everything Vanessa once believed she needed.
Status.
Wealth.
Security.
Now it would become something useful.
"Thank you," Claire whispered.
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
"Thank you for not hating me."
Claire reached across the table.
"We were both caught in the same storm."
She squeezed Vanessa's hand.
"The important thing is that we found our way to shore."
Outside, children laughed.
