Chapter 18 - A NEW NAME
The following year, the center reopened under a new name:
THE VANCE FAMILY CENTER FOR THE ARTS.
The old sign was gone.
A new one stood beneath the summer sky.
Music filled the building.
Children painted.
Teenagers performed.
Parents laughed.
Vanessa managed operations.
Marcus taught music.
Claire directed the center.
And Lily stood before a blank canvas.
She was older now.
Stronger.
Happier.
"What are you painting?" Claire asked.
Lily dipped her brush into yellow.
"Our family."
Claire smiled.
"Who is in it?"
"Me."
She painted.
"You."
Another stroke.
"Marcus."
Then the building.
Then trees.
Then an enormous sky.
Claire watched her daughter create the future one brushstroke at a time.
The past was no longer the center of their lives.

But Claire didn't know yet that another storm was already forming beyond the horizon.
