Chapter 27 - THE LIFE THEY CHOSE

A year passed.
The Vance Family Center became a regional institution.
Children came from across the state.
The mural WE ARE NOT FOR SALE hung in the main gallery.
Lily was now eleven.
Confident.
Creative.
Unafraid.
Vanessa had become executive director.
Marcus taught music.
Claire led the foundation.
Their home was filled with ordinary things.
Breakfast conversations.
School projects.
Paint on kitchen counters.
Laughter.
The kind of life Claire had once believed existed only for other people.
One evening, she stood beside Lily while the girl painted.
"What are you making?"
Lily smiled.
"Our future."
Claire looked at the canvas.
There was a house.
A family.
The arts center.
A giant blue sky.
And one empty space in the painting.
"What's that?"
Lily shrugged.
"I don't know yet."
Claire laughed.
"Maybe you'll figure it out."
Lily dipped her brush into yellow.
"I will."
Claire didn't know why, but those words stayed with her.
Maybe because life had taught her something.
The future was never empty.
May you like
It was simply unwritten.
